About this postcard
Canaletto's View in Venice shows the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, where the basilica's brick facade and the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni frame a paved square. Small figures in eighteenth-century dress cross the open space, and gondolas and a bridge appear along the nearby canal. Canaletto painted such Venetian views for Grand Tour travelers, who valued them as precise records of the city. This painting later entered the Widener Collection, whose gift helped form the National Gallery of Art.
