About this postcard

A stone marker carved with an inscription commemorating the birth of Virginia Dare stands outdoors, trees and open sky behind it. The lettering covers the face of the stone and is legible in the photograph. Virginia Dare, born on Roanoke Island in 1587, was the first English child born in the New World and the granddaughter of governor John White. She was part of the colony that disappeared before relief arrived, and the Lost Colony story became a lasting draw for visitors to the Outer Banks. The nearby town of Manteo, named for a Croatoan leader, grew up around that tourism trade.
