About this postcard
A color-printed view of the Virginia Lumber Company's saw mill in Virginia, Minnesota, dominated by a tall dark cylindrical burner or silo rising above the long mill buildings and a smokestack. Virginia, on the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota, was a major lumber and mining center in the early twentieth century, and large mills like this one processed timber cut from the surrounding north woods. The long low ranges with rows of windows and the elevated conveyor at right are typical of steam-powered band mills of the period.
