About this postcard
View across a lawn and clipped shrubs toward the crenellated barracks buildings of the Virginia Military Institute, with a stone monument on a blocky pedestal standing in the paved courtyard at center. VMI was founded in Lexington in 1839 as the nation's first state-supported military college, and its Gothic Revival barracks are a landmark of the town; the cadets famously fought at the 1864 Battle of New Market. The card's linen-era coloring shows the quadrangle in autumn, with ivy covering parts of the pale stone facades.
