About this postcard

A view across a fenced lawn and a tiered cast-iron fountain toward the Virginia State Capitol, a large white Neoclassical building with a columned portico and pediment, flanked by lower wings. Thomas Jefferson designed the capitol with Charles-Louis Clérisseau, modeling it on the Maison Carrée at Nîmes; completed in 1788, it has served continuously as the seat of Virginia's government and holds Jean-Antoine Houdon's life-size statue of George Washington in its rotunda. The surrounding grounds, Capitol Square, include monuments and mature trees.
