About this postcard

Color lithograph view of the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, a Neoclassical building modeled on the Maison Carrée at Nîmes, France, designed by Thomas Jefferson with Charles-Louis Clérisseau and completed in 1788. Its central portico of six Corinthian columns and flanking wings are shown with American flags flying, crowds of figures on the steps and lawn, and a grassy capitol square in the foreground. The building served as the seat of Virginia's government and, during the Civil War, of the Confederate Congress.
