About this postcard
A view across a fenced lawn and a tiered cast-iron fountain toward a large white Neoclassical building with a columned portico and pediment, flanked by lower wings. This is the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, designed by Thomas Jefferson with Charles-Louis Clérisseau and completed in 1788, modeled on the Maison Carrée at Nîmes; it has served continuously as the seat of Virginia's government and houses Jean-Antoine Houdon's life-size statue of George Washington in its rotunda. The surrounding grounds, laid out as Capitol Square, include monuments and mature trees.
