Volcano at Knott's Berry Place, Buena Park, CA, circa 1963

About this postcard

A mound of dark volcanic rock rises among cacti, Joshua trees, and other desert plants at Knott's Berry Place in Buena Park, with steam drifting from the top. A building stands behind the display, and a DANGER sign sits at the right. The caption calls it the only active volcano in Southern California, with a question mark that turns the claim into a joke, and says it was moved 40 miles from the desert. Knott's Berry Place grew from Walter Knott's berry stand into a popular Orange County attraction, and the volcano was a roadside novelty, a piece of desert scenery transplanted far from the desert.
