About this postcard

The card shows the W. F. Taubel Knitting Mills in Shamokin, Pennsylvania: a long five-story brick block with rows of arched windows, a square tower at the left, and a water tower and smaller brick buildings behind. A faint painted sign on the upper facade reads "TAUBEL KNITTING MILLS." Shamokin, in Northumberland County, lay in the anthracite coal fields, and knitting and hosiery mills were among the town's principal manufactures in the early 1900s. This card was mailed to Herman Bauer, care of the Wagner Knitting Mills in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and its German message points to the network of German-speaking workers who moved between mill towns in the trade.
