About this postcard

The Wachusett Dam rises in a long earthen-and-masonry embankment behind a small stone gatehouse, with a curving road and a pool of water in the foreground. Built by the Metropolitan Water Board across the Nashua River and completed in 1905, the dam impounds the Wachusett Reservoir, a key piece of Boston's public water supply. The gatehouse at its base controls the outlet flow. The scene dates to the dam's early years, when the surrounding grounds were still open lawn and gravel road.
