About this postcard
View of the Wachusett Dam, a massive earthen-and-masonry embankment rising behind a small stone gatehouse, with a curving roadway and a pool of water in the foreground. The dam, built by the Metropolitan Water Board across the Nashua River and completed in 1905, impounds the Wachusett Reservoir, a key link in Boston's public water supply; the structure at its base houses the outlet gates controlling the flow. The card pictures the works in their early years, when the surrounding grounds were still largely open lawn and gravel road.
