About this postcard
Looking west down Wall Street, the narrow canyon of early office towers closes on the brownstone Gothic spire of Trinity Church, with pedestrians, a few motor vehicles, and horse-drawn wagons filling the roadway. The church is the third on the site, designed by Richard Upjohn and consecrated in 1846; its 281-foot spire stood at the head of the street and was for decades the tallest structure in the city, a fixed landmark in every view of the financial district. By 1912 the surrounding towers had long since risen above it, and Wall Street was the working center of American finance, its sidewalks busy with clerks, brokers, and messengers through the business day.
