About this postcard

The map covers Waltham, Massachusetts, and the surrounding towns, with roads, the Charles River, route numbers, and local landmarks. Gore Place, the country estate of Governor Christopher Gore, is marked; the caption describes its twenty-room mansion built in 1805 and its period furnishings. Old Bemis Dam (1776) and neighboring communities such as Newton, Belmont, Watertown, Lexington, and Wellesley also appear. By the late 1940s Waltham was a manufacturing city on Boston's western edge, and Route 20 carried travelers between Boston and the western suburbs.
