About this postcard
A stone pumping station with a green hipped roof and two small towers stands on a low embankment beside calm water. A tall red brick smokestack rises at its left, with trees and a house behind the building under a cloudy, tinted sky. The station was part of Waltham's water system in a busy manufacturing city known for watches and textiles; such works supplied water and fire protection as the city grew. Mildred's note catches a winter Sunday night: just back from Malden after eleven, she is too tired to write a long letter to Maudie. The solid public building and the sender's ordinary fatigue sit together without fuss.
