The War Memorial Building fills the view as a long, pale stone Art Deco hall, its flat roof and deep vertical pylons forming a colonnade above a lawn and curving walk. Carved across the facade is the inscription "PEACE SHALL COME TO THOSE WHO STRIVE FOR PEACE." Completed in 1940 as Mississippi's memorial to its World War I servicemen, the building also housed the state Department of Archives and History and stands near the Old Capitol in downtown Jackson.
