The painting shows George Washington as a gentleman farmer at Mount Vernon during the wheat harvest. He stands in colonial dress with a rake in the foreground beside a worker, while enslaved laborers and children gather sheaves and load wheat onto a horse-drawn wagon. A large tree frames the right side. Junius Brutus Stearns painted the scene in 1851 as an idealized view of Washington's plantation life, a subject that softened the reality of the enslaved workforce that made Mount Vernon's harvest possible.
