Gilbert Stuart's painting Washington at Dorchester Heights shows George Washington in military uniform standing beside a white horse, with a landscape and ships in the background. The scene commemorates the March 1776 fortification of Dorchester Heights, when American troops hauled cannon from Fort Ticonderoga to the heights above Boston and forced the British army to evacuate the city. Stuart painted the portrait in 1806; the original is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
