About this postcard
Emanuel Leutze's Washington Crossing the Delaware shows George Washington standing in a crowded rowboat, surrounded by Continental soldiers and oarsmen, with an American flag flying behind him. The boat pushes through ice-choked water toward a snow-covered bank, and distant troops with horses fill the background. Leutze painted the scene in 1851 as a romanticized image of the December 1776 crossing. The caption pairs the image with Thomas Paine's line from The American Crisis: "These are the times that try men's souls."
