About this postcard

George Washington stands among Continental Army officers in Constantino Brumidi's fresco of the incident at Yorktown. Several officers wear blue and buff uniforms, one wears red, and a Black soldier stands at the right. A seated figure sits near a table with papers and a red chair. The caption dates the moment to Oct. 17, 1781, when Washington refused Cornwallis's request for a two-day cessation of hostilities. Brumidi, an Italian-born artist, painted the scene for the U.S. Capitol's Hall of Representatives, where it commemorated the Revolutionary War victory.
