About this postcard

White marble sarcophagus-style tombs and monuments stand in a row on a green lawn at Wakefield, backed by tall evergreens and a red brick wall. A large bare-branched tree rises at right under a blue sky with clouds. The plot holds the graves of Augustine Washington, George Washington's father, who died in 1743, along with earlier Washingtons including Lawrence and John. Wakefield, in Westmoreland County, is the plantation where George Washington was born in 1732. The family burying ground is a quiet, enclosed site, separate from the public monuments that commemorate the first president.
