About this postcard

A bronze figure of George Washington stands atop a tall stone pedestal on a grassy, tree-shaded green, ringed by short white posts and set beside a broad dirt roadway. The card names the spot as the Washington Monument on Washington Mall in Newburyport, Massachusetts, the long central public green around which the old seaport town was laid out. The monument honors the town's Revolutionary-era associations, and the elm-lined mall behind it was a favored promenade and gathering place in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
