About this postcard

A bronze figure of George Washington stands atop a tall stone pedestal on a grassy, tree-shaded green, ringed by short white posts and set beside a broad dirt roadway. The green is Washington Mall, the long central common of Newburyport, an old seaport town laid out around it. The monument honors the town's Revolutionary-era associations, and the elm-lined mall served as a promenade and gathering place in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
