Washington National Airport terminal, Washington, D.C., circa 1945
About this postcard
The card shows the long, low main terminal building of Washington National Airport, with its central control tower, rooftop flagpoles and a twin-engine airliner parked on the apron in front. Opened in 1941 on reclaimed land along the Potomac River in Arlington, Virginia, the airport was the Washington area's first major commercial airfield and was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 1998. The streamlined terminal and its rows of tall windows reflect the Moderne styling typical of American airport architecture of the late 1930s and 1940s.
