About this postcard
A long red-brick barn with a steep red roof, two louvered cupolas, and white-trimmed dormers stands behind a low stone wall draped in ivy; an exterior wooden stair rises to a loft door at the gable end. The printed caption identifies it as Washington's Barn at Mount Vernon and dates the building to 1753, when it was built with bricks imported from England. It was used during George Washington's occupancy of Mount Vernon, his Potomac River plantation. The caption also points to the coach house, where Washington's carriage, known as the "lost coach," was recovered and presented to the Association in 1895 by R. I. Brownfield of Philadelphia.
