About this postcard
A long red-brick barn with a steep red roof, two louvered cupolas and white-trimmed dormers stands behind a low stone wall heavily draped in ivy, with an exterior wooden stair rising to a loft door at the gable end. The caption identifies it as Washington's Barn at Mount Vernon, George Washington's Potomac River plantation in Virginia, now a preserved historic site administered by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Washington was an innovative farmer who designed specialized farm buildings for his estate, and the brick barn shown here is among the plantation's surviving or restored agricultural structures.
