Washington's Profile rock, The Nubble, York, Maine, circa 1904

About this postcard
A close view of a large, weathered granite boulder on the shore whose outline was long read as a profile of George Washington, with the sea behind it. The card names the spot as The Nubble at York, Maine — the rocky point at Cape Neddick, just south of the Cape Neddick (Nubble) Light of 1879, one of the most photographed stretches of the southern Maine coast. Such naturally carved "profiles" and "faces" in rock were standard tourist curiosities of the era, and this one was marketed under Washington's name.
