About this postcard

A close view of a large weathered granite boulder on the shore at The Nubble in York, Maine, its outline read as a profile of George Washington, with the sea behind it. The Nubble is the rocky island off Cape Neddick, home to the Cape Neddick Light of 1879, and the spot sits on the southern Maine coast. Rock formations that resembled faces or famous figures were popular shoreline curiosities in the early twentieth century, and this one was promoted under Washington's name.
