Water lilies and lotus on a pond, Florida, circa 1910

About this postcard

A broad pond is carpeted with floating lily pads and a scattering of pink blossoms, with a dense wall of trees and shrubbery along the far bank and a pale sky above. The card's own caption names the scene simply as "Where the Lotus Grows, Florida," a typical view of the state's still-water ponds and swamps that tourists collected in the early 20th century. Such aquatic plants — water lilies and the American lotus — were a standard Florida scenic subject in the hand-colored lithograph era.
