The Water Power Station at Rock Island Arsenal is a long, yellow building with a red roof and a continuous arcade of arched openings at water level, set against wooded bluffs. The arsenal occupies an island in the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. Established in the 1860s, it became a major Army manufacturing center, and the power station supported the shops and foundries that produced ordnance and military equipment.
