About this postcard
A weathered plank cabin with a covered porch stands behind tall corn. A woman in a red-and-white striped blouse sits on the porch steps, and another figure rests in a chair behind her. Laundry hangs at the porch rail, and a small outbuilding sits in the distance. The printed caption, "Way Down Yonder in the Cornfield," comes from a popular 1890s song. A printed note states that the 1905 U.S. corn crop was 80 percent of the world's annual product and worth more than $1.2 billion. The scene is a generic Southern cabin view, not a named location, and belongs to a broad genre of Southern cabin imagery on early twentieth-century postcards, which often used sentimental or stereotyped conventions to depict Black rural life rather than documentary fact.
