A square stone tower or monument stands alone in tall grass, its upper stage pierced by empty window openings and its lower level marked by a dark doorway. A low building and a line of trees sit faintly on the right horizon. The worn masonry and blocky form suggest an old defensive or commemorative work surviving in open country. The photographer E. Galli was based in Taormina, Sicily, a hill town known for its Greek theater and layered ancient remains, which gives the scene a likely Sicilian setting.
