An elderly woman in traditional Welsh dress sits reading a book beside an ivy-covered stone wall. She wears the tall black hat and patterned shawl long associated with Welsh costume, a style that became a popular subject for souvenir portraits in the early 1900s.
The card was posted from Deganwy, on the north Wales coast, in the autumn of 1910 and sent to Philadelphia. Its only message, "per. R.M.S. Mauretania," names the Cunard liner then on the transatlantic run.
Decorative black border with gold ornate corners and gold frame; heavy wear and chipping to the black border, especially top and right edges. Early 20th-century lithograph.
Postmark: DEGANWAY 9 PM OC 28 10 (only 'DEGAN' is visible; Deganwy, Wales, inferred from the RMS Mauretania and date). Divided-back card with 'PRINTED MATTER' written across the top; half penny King Edward VII 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' stamp. Gold-embossed black border on front, c. 1907-1915. Light edge wear.
