A tinted view of the West Middle School in Hartford, Connecticut — a large three-story red-brick building with light stone banding, a steep hipped roof, tall chimneys, and an arched central entrance, set behind a broad lawn with shade trees. West Middle School was one of Hartford's public grammar schools of the late nineteenth century, housed in a substantial Romanesque-influenced brick structure typical of city school architecture of the period. The card was sent as a brief greeting in November 1906.
White border along the bottom carrying the printed caption in red; handwritten note in ink across the lower border; vertical stain/streak and light surface wear; corners slightly worn.
Postmark: NEW YORK, N.Y. NOV 2 6:30 PM 1906. Undivided back ("THIS SIDE IS FOR THE ADDRESS ONLY"), Polychrome (Made in Germany) imprint, 1¢ Franklin green stamp; light edge wear, small nick at top edge, and a partial "MASS. '06" transit mark at the left edge.
