West view, Natural Bridge, Virginia, 1936

About this postcard

The view looks west through the limestone arch of Natural Bridge, Virginia, with Cedar Creek running through the gorge below and dense hardwood forest on the surrounding slopes. The arch rises roughly 215 feet and spans about 90 feet. A young George Washington is said to have surveyed it, and Thomas Jefferson once owned the land and built a small cabin nearby. By the 1930s the site was a long-established resort attraction with a hotel and trails; it is now a Virginia state park.
