The view looks north along West Water Street from Grand Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. Electric streetcars run between commercial blocks, while horse-drawn wagons and pedestrians share the roadway. Signs for The Empire restaurant and the Milwaukee German Daily newspaper point to the mix of retail and publishing in a district with a large German-speaking population. In the early 1900s, street railways and delivery wagons were still common together on busy downtown streets.
