Emanuel Leutze's "Westward Ho!" shows an immigrant wagon train crossing the Rocky Mountains. Covered wagons, settlers, horses, and figures fill the scene, with a man standing on a rock and holding an American flag. Below, a smaller panel reproduces Albert Bierstadt's "Golden Gate, Harbor of San Francisco." The Capitol painting is usually titled Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way; Bierstadt was known for grand Western landscapes.
