Whaling bark at her dock, New Bedford, Massachusetts, circa 1910

About this postcard

A large three-masted square-rigged bark lies moored alongside a wooden wharf, with a U.S. flag at her mainmast truck and several small rowboats and a sloop in the foreground water; figures stand on the pier. The caption identifies her as a whaling bark at her dock in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the great center of the American whaling industry in the nineteenth century. By the time this photograph was made, New Bedford's fleet had dwindled, and such vessels were already becoming nostalgic symbols of the port's whaling past.
