Whirlpool Rapids and railroad bridges, Niagara Falls, New York, circa 1910

About this postcard

The view looks across the churning Whirlpool Rapids of the Niagara River toward the steel arch of a railway bridge spanning the gorge, with a train visible on the deck and spray rising from the water in the foreground. The card names the scene as the Whirlpool Rapids and the railroad bridges at Niagara Falls, New York. The Whirlpool Rapids stretch of the lower Niagara has long been a spectacle for visitors, and the cantilever and arch railway bridges built across the gorge in the late 19th and early 20th centuries carried the Michigan Central and Great Gorge routes over the river.
