Whirlpool Rapids & Great Gorge Route, Niagara Falls, 1914

About this postcard

The Whirlpool Rapids churn through the Niagara Gorge, with a steel cantilever railway bridge spanning the gorge in the distance and a trolley car of the Great Gorge Route running along the left bank on tracks beside the water. The Great Gorge Route was a scenic electric railway opened in the 1890s that carried tourists along the rim of the Niagara Gorge below the falls, and the cantilever bridge shown is the Michigan Central Railway crossing at Niagara Falls. The view takes in the white water below the Whirlpool, the narrow stretch that made the rapids a standard stop on Niagara tours.
