A white clapboard church with a tall pointed steeple and an open belfry holding a bell. Arched windows and doors line the front, and bare trees stand around the yard, placing the scene in late fall or winter.
Boothbay Harbor, Maine, was a coastal town known in that era for boatbuilding and for its summer colony on the Boothbay peninsula. A village church of this kind served both year-round residents and seasonal visitors who came by steamer.
