About this postcard
The White House of the Confederacy in Richmond is a two-story white Greek Revival mansion built in 1818, with a giant-order portico of six smooth columns, a flat entablature, and a small louvered cupola and chimneys above a low red roof. Tall shuttered windows and grilled doorways open onto the porch, reached by a short flight of steps; bare deciduous trees frame the view, and a large brick commercial block stands at the left along the street. Richmond was the Confederate capital, and Jefferson Davis occupied the house during the "war between the states"; the caption also notes its role as the Confederate Museum, holding 16,000 Civil War relics.
