About this postcard
A sepia-toned studio photograph of a white lily in full bloom, its recurved petals marked with dark speckles, rising from a fan of narrow dark leaves, with a second blossom blurred at the left. The image is signed "Sandison" in the negative at the lower right, the mark of a commercial photographer rather than a publisher. Such single-flower studies were popular real-photo postcards in the first two decades of the twentieth century, when lilies — especially the Easter lily, Lilium candidum and its hybrids — carried strong associations with purity and the Easter season.
