About this postcard
The White Oaks Motel is a single-story red-brick motor court with a white hipped roof and a porch carried by a row of white columns. A broad paved drive and a green lawn shaded by tall oaks lead past a small red "ENTRANCE" sign; at the right, the roadside sign reads "WHITE OAKS MOTEL." The caption places the court two miles north of Sweet Briar on Route 29 near Amherst, Virginia, in the Piedmont south of Lynchburg. Its return address advertises "12 new units," air-conditioning, tile baths, and foam rubber mattresses, the kind of postwar roadside comforts that motels used to draw auto travelers. The owners were Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Phillips. A traveler's note on the card mentions a recent stop in Charlotte, N.C., and a plan to continue north, a small trace of the motor-touring trade the motel served.
