About this postcard

A two-story clapboard house with green shutters, twin chimneys and a columned side porch stands behind a wooden picket fence, with bare trees in the yard and neighboring houses at right. The caption names it the Whittier Home in Amesbury, Massachusetts, the residence of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892), who lived there from 1836 until his death and wrote much of his verse in its upstairs study. The house is now preserved as a museum.
