Whittier's Home with portrait of John Greenleaf Whittier, Amesbury, Massachusetts, circa 1903

About this postcard

A halftone view of the two-story clapboard house in Amesbury, Massachusetts, where the poet John Greenleaf Whittier lived from 1836 until his death in 1892, framed by an ornate floral border with an oval portrait of Whittier inset at right. Whittier, one of the best-known American poets of the nineteenth century and an ardent abolitionist, wrote much of his later verse in this house, which became a pilgrimage site for admirers after his death. The card's own caption names it simply "Whittier's Home, Amesbury, Mass."
