An elevated view from Cheyenne Mountain looks down on the Shrine of the Sun, a stone tower set on a wooded ridge, with a winding dirt highway in the foreground and the plains and distant city of Colorado Springs beyond. The tower was completed in 1937 and named for Will Rogers, the humorist and actor who died in a 1935 plane crash. Colorado Springs entrepreneur Spencer Penrose built the shrine, and the road and tower became a scenic landmark above the city.
