About this postcard
The Williamsburg Bridge crosses the East River between Manhattan's Lower East Side and Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Its steel towers and lattice truss roadway rise above a working waterfront, with steamboats and a ferry on the river and brick industrial buildings along the shore in the foreground. Completed in 1903, the bridge was designed by Leffert L. Buck and carried the longest suspension span in the world at the time. The crowded river traffic and factory-lined shore reflect the busy harbor that surrounded the bridge in the early 20th century.
