About this postcard
The Williamsburg Bridge spans the East River in this view, its steel towers and lattice truss roadway rising above a busy waterfront with steamboats and a ferry plying the water and brick industrial buildings in the foreground. Opened in 1903 to link Manhattan's Lower East Side with Brooklyn's Williamsburg, the bridge was designed under Leffert L. Buck and, at the time of its completion, had the longest suspension span in the world. The crowded river traffic and factory-lined shores shown here reflect the working harbor that surrounded it in the early 20th century.
