A woman in a long white dress and wide-brimmed hat stands on a lawn beside a large flowering rose bush. Behind her is a frame house with a covered porch and lattice skirting, with dense trees beyond.
The garden portrait is tied to Waltham, Mass., in the summer of 1909, when the city was known for watchmaking. The writer mentions Uncle Carter's arrival that noon and a detour around bridge repairs in Concord, a small glimpse of local travel at the time.

Your Uncle Carter
arrived this noon.
Had to go five
miles out of his
way because a
bridge in Concord
was being repaired.
Am glad you was
not ill after your
trip. Was afraid you
would be tired out as the
weather was so warm. I'll
excuse you about this duty
letter. Uncle Carter said you
spoke about it to him -
Love to all.
