About this postcard
A line of canoes crowded with women in white dresses and hats floats on a calm river beside a wooded bank, with a plank boathouse or shed at left and a wooden landing stair at center. The printed caption names the group as the Womans' Boat Club of Lynchburg, Virginia, likely the Women's Boat Club. Lynchburg sits on the James River, and river outings were a familiar summer social activity in the early 1900s, when women's athletic and social clubs were expanding. A handwritten note on the card asks Birdie Smith whether she recognizes the sender and mentions a 77th birthday the next day. The note turns the club photograph into a personal greeting between friends.
